Rules for New Drivers...
Parents should consider establishing a set of rules for teens to follow when they begin
driving. Below you will find some examples. These work well in conjunction with a solid driver education program.
Supervised behind-the-wheel driving experience is the key
to developing necessary habits and skills for safe driving. Our state certified instructors are experienced
and skilled educators.
- Please be courteous to other drivers. If we are to share the road, we need to be
polite to other drivers.
- Use your turn signals. There is a reason that they are part of the car.
- Know your car. Learn from a professional how to check your fluid levels and tire pressures.
- Learn how to change a flat tire. AAA won't always be there quickly.
- Use the appropriate type of gas for your car. Wash your windows when you fill up.
- Choose your music before you drive away. Many accidents occur when the CD is being changed.
- Go to a professional driving school. You will get more experience in dealing with
hazardous or difficult driving conditions. Professional driving schools don't teach you how to be
Speed Racer, they teach you to be a good driver.
- DON'T Drink and Drive. Even sodas, milkshakes, or other beverages are a distraction.
- If your cell phone rings, wait to answer it until you can pull off in a safe location.
If the call is important, they will leave a message.
- Get plenty of rest before setting behind the wheel. Fatigue can impair decision making
skills.
- Headphones should never be worn while driving.
- Appropriate footwear should always be worn while driving.
- Parents should restrict driving privileges for young drivers until they
have gained sufficient experience.
- Parents should limit their teen's driving in adverse weather conditions
(rain, snow, ice, fog. etc.) and at night until the teen has sufficient skills and experience.
Our Xtreme Driver
Control Course provides a safe environment to begin developing these skills.
- Parents should work out when and where the teen is allowed to drive the car (e.g.
to and from part-time job, etc.).
- Everyone in the car must wear seat belts at all times.
- Parents should determine whether and when their teen can drive passengers. Some
states have established a law that no passengers are allowed in the car until the teen has logged a
defined period of safe independent driving
- Parents should determine what behavior or circumstances will result in loss of the
teen's driving privileges.
- Teens - thank your parents! Lots of love and understanding gave you the privilege of driving.
